How to remove Gum from your Carpet ?

Having gum removed from carpet is more daunting compared to a concrete surface. Gum and fibres of a carpet seem to have a strong connection.

Listed below are some common home remedies for the removal of gum from the fibres of your carpet.

Method 1: Using Ice

Place a few ice cubes in a ziplock bag and place it on top of the chewing gum. This will harden the gum making it easier to remove. Leave for approximately 5 minutes. When the gum becomes solid it is then easy to scrape off by using a blunt knife. Be careful not to rub or scrape too vigorously as this will damage the delicacy of the carpet fibres.

Method 2:  Using Detergent

First, pour a generous amount of liquid detergent on the carpet over the gum. Then use a cleaning brush to gently scrape the gum from the carpet.
Finish by rinsing with water as this will remove any unseen traces of gum and detergent on the carpet and if there is too much excess water, gently blot up with a paper towel.

Method 3: Using an Iron

For this method, cover the gum on your carpet with a paper towel and run an iron over it. The heat from the iron helps to melt the gum and hopefully, it will stick to the paper towel. For the stains to disappear from the carpet and transfer completely to the paper towel, you need to continue the ironing.

Additional tips

1. The use of warm vinegar can also be used to remove chewing gum from carpet.  Just apply some vinegar on the gum and allow it to set and then rinse it by using clean water.

2. Lemon juice can also be used to remove the stickiness left by the gum.

3. Try using oils and solvents to remove older or larger gum stains from your carpet.

4. Another way is to opt for commercial products that are typically designed for removing gum from carpet.

5. Carpet fibres are very delicate and can be damaged easily while scraping the gum out by using sharp tools. Use a dull knife, butter knife or a rounded metal spoon to scrape away the gum.
